 Time for change

“I intend to bring real change to Hendon, and with your help and support, we can achieve it together. Make 2010 the year of change”, says Matthew Offord.

One thing is certain: there has to be a general election in the first 6 months of the New Year. That election will be an opportunity to bring about the change the country, and Hendon, needs.  But that change can only happen if people vote for it.

The last year has been one of the most challenging ever for politics. It is now vital that we restore stability to the British economy and responsibility to our public finances. Gordon Brown’s economic mismanagement means that radical decisions must be taken to rebuild Britain’s economy, ensure the integrity of our political system and inspire growth.

A new government must deal with important issues

•   Deal with Labour’s jobs crisis. With one-in-five young people out of work, action must be taken to get our young people into education, training or employment.

•   Reduce Labour’s debt mountain. The government has not been honest about the difficult decisions we know will need to be taken. An in-coming Conservative government will not duck this and has already told the public what needs to be done.

•   Make transparent changes to MPs expenses. Many MPs claimed they acted within the rules over their expenses but that was not enough – MPs must be seen to be working with the system, and in the interests of their constituents.

It is now vital we restore stability to the British economy and responsibility to our public finances. Unfortunately, Gordon Brown’s economic mismanagement means we can’t promise up-front tax cuts – but there’s much more we can do.
